Job Title: Media Outreach Specialist

With 3 million members, Working America mobilizes working people who don't have the benefit of a union at work to fight for good jobs and a fair economy. As the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, we unite working people in urban and suburban communities around a shared economic agenda.

The Media Outreach Specialist carries the voice of America's working families to the media, to leaders and to the general public through various media and communications outlets.

Reports to: Communications Director


Media Outreach and Events:

  • Provide overall communications and media support for Working America nationally and in targeted states;
  • Draft, edit, and distribute organizational press releases, background pieces, advisories, fact sheets, talking points, and other news-related information, as well as flyers and campaign materials;
  • Write, edit, and place reports, op-eds and letters to the editor;
  • Perform monitoring of media clips and compile and distribute media reports and analysis;
  • Maintain and update organizational media clips and contact lists;
  • Arrange and coordinate media interviews, compile background research, and prepare spokespeople;
  • Conceive and help implement media outreach and events based on close tracking of news opportunities;
  • Develop strategies to improve Working America's public image using a full range of media;
  • Conduct media training with Working America staff, activists and leaders at all levels.


  • Initiate contact with and respond to inquiries from print, radio and television journalists, pitching story ideas and providing information to generate positive media coverage of the labor movement;
  • Work with field-based communicators at the affiliate, state and local levels to plan media events, coordinate consistent message delivery, and provide communications support for activities of the labor movement at every level;
  • Communicate and coordinate with donors to plan and implement briefings, fundraisers and other events.


  • Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • At least 2-3 years of relevant media relations experience in a union, political, or progressive issue campaign environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience writing op-eds, LTEs, press releases, fact sheets and other media related materials;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and ability to work independently as well as on a team;
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and able to adapt quickly to meet project needs;
  • Demonstrated experience meeting tough deadlines and providing fast turn-around of quality communications and working in a high-pressure environment;
  • Strong personal planning, motivation, and time management skills, with an ability to operate in a highly organized fashion;
  • Demonstrated political skills and good judgment;
  • Strong background in, or strong familiarity with, the labor movement, movements for progressive social change, and political or issue campaigns;
  • Demonstrated interest in making a career in the labor movement;
  • A strong understanding of organizational goals, procedures and protocols, and the ability to work within these parameters;
  • A bachelor degree in communications, journalism, or other related field desirable;
  • Proficiency in Internet-based research, word processing and e-mail programs;
  • Flexibility to travel as required in performance of duties.
