Special Project Coordinator

Job title:  Special Project Coordinator

The Special Project Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of a membership program of retail workers and consumers.  This National Headquarters position will oversee multidimensional community and online campaigns targeting retail workers and consumers, help draft member communications, and work with the program and member mobilization teams to identify and test methods to generate activism and build attachment among members to the organization. This is a fixed-term position with an expected end date of December 12, 2014.

Reports to: Assistant Director


  • Work with Assistant Director to develop and implement membership program for current and former retail workers and consumers;
  • Assist in the identification and development of strategies aimed at building and retaining membership among retail workers and consumers, and help measure and analyze the effectiveness of such strategies;
  • Execute effective on-the-ground and online campaigns that broaden and deepen activism and engagement among retail workers and consumers;
  • Conduct research on issues that impact retail workers and consumers;
  • Work with the Communications, Program, Mobilization, and Field teams to identify and test member actions that engage retail workers and consumers and build attachment to the organization;
  • Work with the Mobilization team to help develop activists and spokespeople around retail worker/consumer issues;
  • Work with Assistant Director to draft, review, and make improvements to member communications targeting retail workers and consumers;
  • Help train staff to communicate on issues affecting retail workers and consumers;
  • Work with labor affiliates, primarily UFCW, and community organizations as directed;
  • Ability to occasionally travel as required in performance of duties;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Three to five years of experience with campaign execution in a labor or progressive environment, membership outreach and development, and/or volunteer organizing;
  • Strong project management and organizational skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications and presentation skills;
  • Strong inter-personal and relationship abilities;
  • Familiarity with labor movement and commitment to economic and social justice;
  • Familiarity with retail industry issues desired;
  • Media experience desired;
  • Proficiency in word processing, e-mail programs, and Internet-based communications required. Knowledge of Salsa and social media platforms desired;
  • Demonstrated experience with training;
