Staff Attorney

Job Title: Staff Attorney

The staff attorney assists the General Counsel by providing research and support that is the foundation for strategic legal advice to Working America and the Working America Education Fund.

Reports to:  General Counsel

Duties:

  • Conduct research as directed by the General Counsel on all matters relating to Working America and the Working America Education Fund and its headquarters and nationwide field offices.
  • Assist with research and compliance with applicable tax laws for affiliated Section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(5) organizations; federal and state lobbying and campaign finance laws; federal, state and local laws applicable to the headquarters and field operations; business registrations; and state charitable solicitation laws, among others.
  • Identify and monitor key statutory and regulatory developments that impact the organization and its programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assist with reviewing organizational communications.
  • Assist with organizing Board governance documents, preparation of materials for Board meetings, attend Board meetings as required, and preserve Board governance documents.
  • Assist with researching municipal canvassing law and drafting documents that defend the right to conduct door-to-door canvassing in cities and towns across the country by opposing undue restrictions on free speech rights.
  • Attend departmental meetings to help identify organizational issues, promote compliance with organizational policies and procedures, and anticipate departmental legal needs.
  • Assist with periodic revision of training materials, organizational policy materials, and other written materials that serve as staff and organizational resources.

Education/Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, with a strong academic background.
  • Membership in good standing of a bar in any state.
  • At least 0-3 years of relevant legal experience; election and tax law experience preferred.
  • Legal experience in some or all the following areas of law is preferred: tax-exempt, election, lobbying, governance, communications, charitable giving, and fundraising.
