Job Title: Writer

Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, is the fastest growing organization
for working people in the country. With more than 3 million members recruited since 2003,
Working America organizes and mobilizes people who do not have a union on the job in support
of working families' issues.

The Writer is responsible for researching, drafting, and editing online and print communications
and campaigns for Working America.

Reports to: Communications Director

Duties:

  • Draft Working America emails, online action pages, blog posts, Twitter feeds, website content, op-eds, fundraising documents and other public and internal documents, including brochures, leaflets, campaign reports, annual reports, field materials, memos and articles; 
  • Ensure quality, clarity and accuracy of content; 
  • Assist with e-mail list-building efforts and with developing list-building strategies; 
  • Manage content on Working America blogs and website; 
  • Develop ongoing narrative strategies with e-activists and on specific issues; 
  • Support Working America fundraising efforts, including grant writing, reporting and analysis;
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years experience in communications/public relations writing effective and persuasive online and print communications; 
  • Previous professional campaign writing experience; 
  • Strong background in, or strong familiarity with the labor movement, movements for progressive social change and political or issue campaigns; 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electronic/new media as a communications tool; 
  • Commitment to editorial excellence; 
  • Experience with technical aspects of e-mail and Web functionality; 
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks; 
  • Demonstrated experience meeting tough deadlines and providing fast turn-around of quality communications and working in a high-pressure environment; 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and work well with internal and external staff at all levels; 
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and able to adapt quickly to meet project needs; 
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment in a support role; 
  • Proficiency in HTML preferred;
  • Aility to work independently within the context of a plan;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Position Type: Full time/regular
